Do you make the effort to take proper care of your teeth and gums? Unfortunately, many people don’t. That is why problems occur within your mouth that can eventually lead to bigger issues and surgery and procedures to correct or help them and alleviate associated pain. As a Prosthodontist in Staten Island, a lot of patients come through the door because of this. Here are some oral hygiene tips to help you keep a healthy mouth.

Using a soft toothbrush and just a dab of toothpaste (that includes fluoride,) you want to move the toothbrush across your teeth in a small circular motion cleaning one tooth at a time. Don’t forget to brush the inside of the teeth especially behind the front teeth. This is where a large amount of plaque builds up in between brushes. Brush your tongue also. The whole brushing process should last between two and three minutes.

Flossing is a vital part of caring for your gums and thus your teeth. You want to be sure to floss at least once a day (generally at night works well to floss away the debris from the day.) Start with your top teeth using a C shape with floss around the sides of your tooth. Don’t forget about your back teeth.

Using an antibacterial mouthwash (that is labeled antiseptic,) finish your routine with a 30 second rinse.  Your mouthwash should contain fluoride to be effective!

Of course you know that your diet can greatly affect your oral health. Avoid eating a lot of sugar or starch. Apples are a great natural tooth brush!
